36 OUTSTANDING ASIAN FILMS TO COMPETE IN THE 3rd ASIAN FILM AWARDS Star-studded Presentation Ceremony set for March 23, 2009
(Hong Kong, January 21, 2009) The Hong Kong International Film Festival Society (HKIFFS) announced today the nominees in the 13 categories of the third annual Asian Film Awards (AFA) Presentation Ceremony, which will take place at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre on March 23, 2009. This event will be the Opening Gala of Entertainment Expo Hong Kong, and will coincide with the two flagship events of the HKIFFS, namely the 33rd Hong Kong International Film Festival (HKIFF), and the 7th Hong Kong – Asia Film Financing Forum (HAF).
Organized by The Hong Kong International Film Festival Society and sponsored by Film Development Fund and Hong Kong Trade Development Council, the AFA celebrates excellence in Asian cinema over the past year. Outstanding films and filmmakers across Asia will compete in 13 categories: Best Film, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Supporting Actor, Best Supporting Actress, Best Screenwriter, Best Cinematographer, Best Production Designer, Best Composer, Best Editor, Best Visual Effects, plus a new category Best Newcomer, which discovers and acknowledges new Asian film talent.
This year AFA is very honoured to have the internationally acclaimed Asian actress, Ms. Michelle Yeoh to be the Jury President. Consisted of 13 film professionals with internationally recognized experience and expertise in cinema from 12 territories and countries (listed on separate sheets), the jury teamed up with the official submission organisation, screened through hundreds of eligible films produced throughout the region in 2008. Up to six nominees in each category have been selected and the full list of nominations includes 36 Asian films.
Mr. Wilfred WONG, Chairman of the Hong Kong International Film Festival Society, joined by Ms. Soo-wei SHAW, Executive Director of the Hong Kong International Film Festival Society, as well as the Honorary Advisors of Asian Film Awards – Mr. NG Si-yuen and Mr. Benjamin CHAU, the Steering Committee members – Ms. Nansun SHI, Mr. Wouter BARENDRECHT, Ms. Pearl WONG and Ms. Winnie TSANG; the Creative Consultant – Mr. Michael WERNER, Ms. Lorna TEE and Ms. Athena TSUI, and Honourary Legal Advisor Mr. Michael LEOW, proudly presented the nomination list at the press conference.
